Aida was commissioned to Verdi by the Egyptian Kediveh in order to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal. It is the opera of political disenchantment: the great scenic and coreographic impact refers to melodramma heritage, but the opera reveals his hopeless melancholy and lost illusions.
