Opera in four acts
Lirics by Antonio Ghislanzoni
Composed by Giuseppe Verdi
First performance: Il Cairo, Opera Theatre, December 24th 1871
Aida was commissioned to Verdi by the Egyptian Kediveh in order to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal. It is the opera of political disenchantment: the great scenic and coreographic impact refers to melodramma heritage, but the opera reveals his hopeless melancholy and lost illusions.
